Message from the President

Fall 2020

Dear Visitors,

Welcome to the Notre Dame School of Manhattan website. We are an independent, Catholic, college-preparatory high school for young women founded in 1912. We are a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYAIS). At Notre Dame, we live the educational mission of Anne de Xainctonge, who founded the Sisters of St. Ursula in 1606 in Dole, France.

Anne wanted to educate girls as the Jesuits educate boys. She provided a unique opportunity for girls to receive a rigorous, classical, religious education outside the walls of the cloister. Anne was immersed in the Ignatian tradition and desired that her students grow in interior freedom and find God in all things.

Four centuries later, we continue Anne’s tradition and offer girls exceptional opportunities to excel personally, academically, and spiritually. During this time of the pandemic, I ask you to learn about the school by taking our virtual tour of our spacious building here on West 13th St. In addition, you may want to listen to the videos of the faculty and students speak about their experiences at the school. During the 2020-2021 school year, community is our theme. At Notre Dame, we work to make sure that each student feels accepted, loved and at home Chez Nous. We want to make sure that our diverse population of students feels included and each one treated equitably.

Through our Anne’s Leaders program, students have several opportunities to develop leadership skills, form friendships with students from every grade level, and learn to make good decisions. We also have an active Student Council with representatives from every grade level. In addition, we have a National Honors Society where students are admitted based on academics, leadership, service and character.

Our academic program includes a wealth of core required courses, eleven AP classes, three honors classes in modern and classical languages, and several exciting electives.

We are grateful to have Mass celebrated in the Alumnae Chapel throughout the school year and to have many opportunities for our students to prepare the liturgy. Students enjoy retreat experiences and participate in the Ignatian Teach-In and the Arrupe Summit.

We are blest with success! One hundred percent of our graduates from the Class of 2020 will attend four-year colleges and universities. One hundred percent won academic scholarships. Among the colleges our graduates will attend are Boston College, Washington University in St Lewis, University of Michigan, Williams College, Johns Hopkins University, and University of California Berkeley.

I invite you to continue to peruse our website. Our in person Open House on October 25th is sold out, but please consider registering for our virtual Open House. (Click Here to Register) I would be happy to see you Chez Nous.

Warm regards,
